It’s time for a Music Video review! Jackson Wang is not only known for his solo music but also for his work in Got7, who I think is an amazingly talented group and doesn’t get as much love as they should, and his variety show work. He is goofy, funny and somehow always seems to know how to light up a room but when he starts rapping, it’s like we are looking at a whole other person. Lets dive right in to it!
We first see an establishing shot of what looks like a city and it looks like we are looking at the top of a building but we can only make out the outline of it by the illuminated square that I assume is the shape of the building. We also see the name of the song ‘Fendiman’ in capital letters in yellow along with Jackson’s name which is of the same font and colour to the song title. Other than this we do not really get much details in terms of where it is or what to expect.
This long shot of Jackson walking up the steps to this building which we now know is the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana as the sun illuminates the building. We also keep coming back to the steps as he raps throughout the video and this are become the most familiar place to us within this Music Video. We also see him here wearing a hat, a dark jacket and also some dark pants. He doesn’t seem to be rapping a lot in this outfit but we still appreciate how he looks with it.
This is the view of Jackson that is most familiar to us within the first half of the music video as this is where we see him most and even throughout the second half as well. This green and black Fendi sweater looks so well on him which is paired with a few simple necklaces. Most of the first verse when he is rapping in also in this exact spot with many cuts to close ups and mid shots along with different camera angles were some are above, some a slightly below, such as the one above, and some are just extreme closeups of his face (not that anyone is complaining).
Can we also just stop and quickly talk about how beautiful this MV location is? Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana is such a stunning backdrop for this music video! It’s simple enough not to take our attention away from Jackson yet still beautiful enough for us to just pause and appreciate it’s beauty. Hopefully one day in the future I will be able to walk up those very steps in Rome.
So basically this is one of the only indoor shots in the music video where he walks from this room through a hall way to another room. It’s not such a dramatic shot where it’s too noticeable but the beauty of this shot is how by using the rule of thirds, our eyes are directly drawn towards Jackson. The room itself feels symmetrical and the beauty of this is that it also makes it feel like a runway which I guess connects with the brand Fendi. There’s not much of a wardrobe change from the outdoor shots to inside except for the fact that he is now wearing a hat and the top he is now sporting is not a turtle neck and the colour has changed from the green to a white.
After walking from the room in that was previously described, we end up in what looks like a corridor. He is looks up as if searching for something and the lighting allows us to see that there is another piece of his outfit that we didn’t notice before. It looks like fanny pack is being worn diagonally across his front. We once again see the rule of theirs come into play and it’s still very symmetrical. Nothing is really happening in this shot but I do appreciate how simple it is but still effective in the way that it draws our attention completely to Jackson. It’s also noticeable that there isn’t too much bright colours used in this first half of the video where we see a lot of dark greens, greys, black, white and a soft cream colour.
Now we enter the second half of the video and not only do we finally get a pop of colour, yellow, we also are now in a different time of the day… or night in this case. We now see Jackson in a yellow sweater which is a nice contrast to his previous two tops. It’s as if it’s a reflection on the change of time. Previously it was day time where he was wearing dark colours but now as it is night, he brings out a bright colour. He seems to be wearing the same hat and accessories. We don’t quite know where exactly this shot is taken but all we know is that it’s outdoors. These type of closeups make us pay special attention to what he is wearing which I am guess is the whole point of this video considering that it is an advertising song for Fendi.
We finally see some dancing but sadly enough, there is not a lot of it. I just want to say that these dancers look great! The two girls look amazing and the girl with the afro has amazing hair! I love the the black pants that the girl with the crop top has and can I just say, KILLER HEELS! The boys didn’t disappoint either but damn they are tall! I can’t say that I was a big fan of the choreography but to each their own right? It wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. I didn’t quite like the weird cheerleading moves with the V arms that Jackson was doing and it just overall felt awkward to me? I could be wrong and everyone loves it and it becomes the new dab or something but all I am saying is that you will not find me doing that move any time soon.
Outfit change! I’m going to take a wild guess and say that this outfit was the one we first saw Jackson wearing in the beginning when he was walking towards the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana. I have nothing to really say about this picture other than the fact that Jackson looks good in whatever he wears!
All I want to know is how in the word these people got Jackson to be sitting on a ledge like that when we all know how scared he is! These images are absolutely breathtaking and the colours are stunning! The first time we see him sitting there, we have no idea how high he really is. We just he him sitting there enjoying himself and rapping. There’s a baby blue background with Jackson sitting centre of the frame. We also see another wardrobe change as now he is sporting a brown jacket, a black t-shirt and a change of pants. It’s not until the camera changes it’s angle and we are slightly overhead and behind Jackson that we see the city. This is when we realise just how high is he and how dangerously close he is to the edge! He looks like he is just casually enjoying himself out there just rapping his heart out.
We also see him walking along the ledge and I have to admit that Jackson must have had to have a lot of courage in order to be walking along so casually like that. This shot of him walking along like that makes him look like he is a model on a runway especially with the way he is walking and the way he is holding himself. What made this one of my favourite shots of the music video is how the sunset is also behind him. I feel like it just enhances the image where it could have been just another panning shot of him just walking.
This is probably the other section of the Music video the I love where the camera just moves around Jackson as he sits on the ledge and we get a clearer view of the city just below. I love how the sky just seems to be so calming with the blue, purple and slight pink mix and how the city below just hasn’t started to light up. It’s that in between time where the sun is just beginning to set and people haven’t quite got their lights on in their houses. This image just seems so calming to me as the city below seems to have no one in it and this makes me feel as if this is a moment where Jackson can take a deep breath and pause for a second to thinking.
Jackson sitting there alone with no one around makes this feel as if it’s an intimate moment as well. It makes me feel that he is just taking a breather, which to be honest he really needs. This is the perfect ending where he can just take the time to think and reflect but also allows us to take a breather as well from the overload of Fendi clothing that we have just been exposed to. For a advertising music video, this is actually quite a beautiful way to finish off as it they know when to push the products as well as when to pull back. This can work in their favour as then the audience notices straight away what is missing and this makes the clothing more memorable. For instance, the yellow sweater that Jackson was wearing with the word ‘Fabulous’ written on it is now memorable for me as it was quite in your face when it was on screen but now that there is no Fendi clothing anymore on screen, I start recalling certain pieces that had stood out for me. This also includes the black pants that one of the dancers was also wearing.
It’s like we’ve come a full circle from the beginning now to the end. Unlike the start where we had seen the title of the song and Jackson’s name, we now only see the logo of the Fendi brand. Same colours and font yet now the sole focus is only on the logo. This is also the same rooftop that we had seen at the beginning, but now more illuminated and we are able to see more details on what the actual building looks like.
Even though this bookend type of start and sending is used a lot within music videos, I do believe that it works. It has more of a polished feel to it and I think if we had the logo right at the beginning along with the song title and his name, it would have been information overload. I love how only the title and Jackson’s name was at the beginning because that is why most people were there. He was the reason why people were even watching and he was what was pulling in the audiences. Having the Fendi logo at the end was a great touch as then people will leave wondering what it stands for and so will search for the brand. I think this type of audience targeting is a great way to entice people into buying your products.
Overal I loved this music video and the song itself. I don’t care what anyone has to say because to be honest, it’s going to be a song that I will playing over and over. It was a beautiful music video even though it may have been very simple. The only part that I wasn’t a big fan of was the choreography but other than that it was overall a really good song for me. It has Jackson’s personality within the song and also his style. It’s great to hear music from him and I hope that he can continue making music that he feels happy with. I also hope that JYP Entertainment gives him and the boys go Got7 the opportunity to have another comeback soon or at least be on a show of their own. I have nothing else to say but that I loved it!
I hope that you enjoyed reading my review of my favourite parts of this MV and the mini commendations that I had added along the way! Keep watching his MV and well as Got7’s MVs and show them some support!
